Every artist performing at Olivia Rodrigo's new Daisy Chain Fields Festival is doing so without pay. The festival, set for August 29 in Irvine, California, will donate 100% of its net proceeds to charity, and the full lineup of all-women artists has agreed to perform for free.
Rodrigo announced the festival Monday night and discussed it in greater detail Tuesday morning during an interview with Diane Sawyer on Good Morning America, according to Variety. The lineup includes Chappell Roan, Doechii, Katseye, Mitski, the Breeders, Die Spitz, Bikini Kill, Eli, Garbage, Quiet Light, Rachel Chinouriri, and Not for Radio. Rodrigo herself will also perform.
"I'm so excited about the lineup. My friend Chappell Roan is going to do it, Doechii, Bikini Kill — Kathleen Hanna is a huge hero of mine," Rodrigo told Sawyer. "100% of the net proceeds of the festival go to charity, and all the incredible artists who are on the bill are doing it for free for charity, which is just a real testament to their hearts as well as the talent."
McLachlan, Stevie Nicks, and Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs are also set to appear as special guests. When Sawyer suggested she would like to see Nicks and Rodrigo perform a duet of Landslide, Rodrigo responded: "We might make that happen for you, Diane. We'll see! Can't give too much away."
Rodrigo said the festival's name came from a specific mental image. "I had an image in my head of girls sitting underneath a tree, making their daisy chains or flower crowns or friendship bracelets," she said. She added that she also liked the idea of the daisy chain as a metaphor, "that we can all be individual links in this chain that is like, larger than the individual."
The festival was directly inspired by Lilith Fair, the all-women, for-charity festival that Sarah McLachlan organized in the 1990s. Rodrigo said McLachlan was the first person she called when the idea came together. "She's a total trailblazer and an incredible artist and a friend," Rodrigo said.
The organizations partnering with Daisy Chain Fields include Baby2Baby, Black Mamas Matter Alliance, Center for Reproductive Rights, FreeFrom, Jhpiego, Johns Hopkins Center for Indigenous Health, National Domestic Workers Alliance, National Institute for Reproductive Health, National Women's Law Center, and Planned Parenthood.
In an Instagram post announcing the festival, Rodrigo wrote: "The lineup is truly insane and full of my heroes and friends. I firmly believe that joy, community and music can be the drivers of meaningful change and I'm hopeful this festival will be just that. I absolutely cannot wait to scream and dance and sing with you guys August 29th!!!!"
