Toy Story 5 opened to £15.3 million, or roughly $20.2 million, across the UK and Ireland last weekend, delivering the biggest opening in the franchise's history for the territory. The film played in over 300 locations and captured 72% of all ticket sales across the three-day frame, according to Variety.
The fifth installment hit theaters to rave reviews and early Oscar buzz, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The film brings back franchise staples Tom Hanks as Woody, Tim Allen as Buzz Lightyear, and Joan Cusack as Jessie. It also adds several new voices to the series, including Bad Bunny, Conan O'Brien, and Alan Cumming. Taylor Swift wrote and performed a new song for the film called "I Knew It, I Knew You."
O'Brien voices a character named Smarty Pants, described as a motion-activated toddler's potty-training gadget. He previously lent his voice to The LEGO Batman Movie in 2017 and The Mitchells vs. the Machines in 2021. Hanks, now 69, is a two-time Oscar winner for Philadelphia and Forrest Gump. He has voiced Woody in every installment of the franchise, which began more than 30 years ago. Fans noticed in the trailer that Woody appeared to have a bald spot, a detail that drew attention online ahead of the film's release.
