FBI agents and NYPD investigators carried out searches across New York City on Wednesday morning as part of a bribery investigation targeting current and former members of the police department. Among the locations searched was the home of former NYPD Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey, according to CBS News.
The joint FBI and NYPD probe centers on bribery allegations involving Maddrey and James McCarthy, the current assistant chief and commanding officer of the Manhattan South precinct. McCarthy's duties have been modified and he was transferred and replaced by NYPD Assistant Chief Melissa Eger, an NYPD spokesperson said.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch issued a statement Wednesday. "When I became Police Commissioner, I promised New Yorkers that under my leadership the NYPD would conduct itself with integrity and that there would be a thorough investigation of any claim that members of service failed to meet that standard," Tisch said.
In a separate case, Frank Carone, the former chief of staff to former New York City Mayor Eric Adams, was arrested by the FBI at his Manhattan residence Wednesday morning. His brother Anthony Carone, Queens hotel owner Yan Po Zhu, and an employee of that hotel were also arrested as part of the same alleged scheme, according to law enforcement sources cited by CBS News.
The case against Carone stems from a city contract issued during the Adams administration, sources told ABC News. A grand jury indictment containing the charges was expected to be unsealed Wednesday in the Eastern District of New York. Carone and the others were expected to be arraigned in Brooklyn federal court.
Carone served as Adams' chief of staff from the mayor's transition into office in January 2022 until December of that year. At the time of his departure, he said it had been an "honor keeping the trains running for this administration," according to a press release from the time.
Both investigations were still developing as of Wednesday afternoon.
