Declan Rice left England's match against Ghana with heavy strapping on his left calf, and his fitness for Saturday's group finale against Panama is now uncertain. England will assess the Arsenal midfielder before making a decision on whether he starts.

According to reports covered by Yahoo Sports, sources close to the situation indicate there is no major concern about Rice's long-term involvement in the tournament. The BBC's Sami Mokbel reported that the problem requires assessment and rest, but that nothing points to a serious injury. The Daily Mail confirmed the injury is not thought to be serious, though no risks will be taken in the Panama match. Kobbie Mainoo is on standby to start if Rice cannot go.

The Telegraph also reported there is no concern Rice suffered a significant injury, and sources insisted he will be fine. Starting him against Panama, however, may still be considered too great a risk.

England head coach Thomas Tuchel offered a separate update on fellow Arsenal player Bukayo Saka, who has been working his way back to fitness during the tournament. "Bukayo seems to be more and more ready, and will hopefully push, and then we will see what is coming," Tuchel said after the Ghana match. "He's getting there, and there's more and more training sessions, so he needs to have more sessions now. Two sessions to be ready for Panama."

Tuchel was careful to manage expectations around Saka's return. "It's not like Bukayo comes back and everything is solved, and I don't want to put this on his back, he is a top player, that's why he is with us, we need him desperately, like every other player, in top shape, and pushing."

England are close to securing a spot in the knockout rounds regardless of what happens Saturday. Three groups already have third-place finishers who cannot match England's record even in the worst case. One more result from the next two days of matches across the tournament would mathematically confirm England's advancement, potentially before they even kick off against Panama.

That situation gives Tuchel room to manage Rice carefully. If England's place in the Round of 32 is confirmed before Saturday, the Panama match becomes a contest purely over group position, and resting a midfielder with a calf concern becomes an easy call.
