Scottie Scheffler shot a 10-under-par 60 on Friday to take a two-shot lead after the second round of the Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Connecticut.
According to BBC Sport, Scheffler made 11 birdies against a single bogey to reach 16 under for the tournament. Norway's Viktor Hovland sits in second place at 14 under after firing a bogey-free 61 that included seven birdies and an eagle.
Scheffler had a chance to shoot 59 at the 18th hole but missed a putt from just outside 26 feet. Jim Furyk holds the PGA Tour record for the lowest round at 58, and Scheffler is one of 14 players who have made a 59, his coming during the 2020 Northern Trust at TPC Boston.
"It was a little tricky," Scheffler said of the missed putt on 18. "It actually went right to start, and there was a tonne of break right to left at the end. It was a tough read, but overall it was a really solid day. I was pretty happy with my execution."
The 30-year-old four-time major winner was asked about his plans heading into the weekend. "Hard to keep up that pace, but continue to execute, continue to give myself looks," he said.
Akshay Bhatia sits four shots back at 12 under after a bogey-free 62 that matched his career-low round. Eric Cole is alongside him after shooting a 65. England's Matt Fitzpatrick is at 10 under, two back of Bhatia, after a four-under 66 that was slowed by two bogeys on his final three holes. Justin Rose and Tommy Fleetwood sit at nine under, with Scotland's Robert MacIntyre a shot further back at eight under.
The Travelers is one of two PGA Tour events in play this week. The John Deere Classic field was also announced Friday, with the tournament set to begin Thursday, July 2 at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Illinois. According to Yahoo Sports, the field includes defending champion Brian Campbell along with Jordan Spieth, Rickie Fowler, Keegan Bradley, Max Homa, Tony Finau, and Tom Kim among the 144 players in the field. TPC Deere Run will play as a par 71 measuring 7,289 yards. This year marks the 26th time the course has hosted the event, and the 28th year John Deere has served as title sponsor, the second-longest sponsorship run on the PGA Tour behind AT&T.
