Marvel is reshuffling one of its most famous teams for a new fighting game this summer. In Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls, the Guardians of the Galaxy return under a new name and a new leader. Spider-Man takes the top spot, bumping Star-Lord to a supporting role.
According to Screen Rant, the new configuration is called the Amazing Guardians. Peter Parker leads the team, with Peter Quill, Ms. Marvel, Peni Parker, and Peni's mech SP//dr rounding out the roster. It is a combination that cuts across several corners of the Marvel universe and does not map neatly onto any existing comic book lineup.
The game is developed by Arc System Works, the studio behind the well-received 2021 fighting game Guilty Gear Strive. Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls is built around four-character tag teams, and several default team configurations have already been revealed. The Amazing Guardians is one of five confirmed groups.
Another team, the Knights of Doom, is led by Doctor Doom and includes Green Goblin, Carnage, and Magneto. The Fighting Avengers pair Captain America, Black Panther, Iron Man, and Hulk. The Unbreakable X-Men feature Storm, Wolverine, Magik, and Danger. A fifth team, led by Ghost Rider, has not been fully revealed.
The default team groupings are not locked in during regular play. Outside of story mode, players can mix and match characters freely across teams. Spider-Man could theoretically team with Doctor Doom, Black Panther, and Storm, regardless of their official assignments.
The game has drawn attention for its visual approach. Arc System Works gave the Marvel characters a distinct anime-inspired redesign, and those character designs have generated significant attention since they were first shown. The Amazing Guardians were revealed alongside a stage set in Knowhere, a location familiar to fans of the Guardians from both the comics and the films.
The Guardians of the Galaxy have appeared in games before. The most notable standalone title was Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, a third-person action-adventure game released in 2021 that built a dedicated following despite modest initial attention. Individual Guardians members also appear in the 2024 arena shooter Marvel Rivals, though that game does not group them together as a team.
