Ryan Gosling is having one of the strongest years of any actor in Hollywood. His science fiction film Project Hail Mary, directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, has earned nearly $700 million at the global box office and recently topped the global iTunes movie charts after leaving theaters. Some observers are already predicting an Oscar nomination for his performance as Dr. Ryland Grace.
With that level of attention on Gosling, a much quieter film from his past is about to become newly accessible. Starting July 1, Lars and the Real Girl will be available to stream for free on Plex, according to Collider.
Released in 2007, the low-budget indie follows a painfully shy young man who forms a meaningful attachment to an anatomically correct doll, and how his small community responds. The film earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay at the 2008 ceremony, though it lost to Juno.
Despite that recognition, the film has remained largely overlooked compared to Gosling's more prominent work. His performances in Barbie, for which he earned a Best Supporting Actor nomination, and The Fall Guy drew wider audiences. But for many critics and fans, his work in Lars and the Real Girl represents something different in his career, a quieter and more internally driven performance than the roles that made him a household name.
Plex is a free, ad-supported streaming service. Lars and the Real Girl will join its catalog on July 1.
