Cara Delevingne has confirmed for the first time that she and Amber Heard were romantically involved, clarifying that the relationship developed after Heard's split from Johnny Depp.
The model and actress made the disclosure on The Louis Theroux Podcast, in an episode that dropped Monday in the United States. Theroux raised the subject by referencing longstanding rumors that Delevingne had been involved with Heard while Heard was still married to Depp. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Theroux told Delevingne that Depp was reportedly "driven crazy by the idea that Amber might be sleeping with you."
Delevingne's response drew a line between the filming of their movie and what came afterward. "Am I meant to comment? It's because we did a movie together, and it was called London Fields. He was also doing the movie. I think he was pretty driven crazy by jealousy. Nothing was happening at that point. Later, after they divorced, it had, I suppose," she told Theroux.
When he asked her to be more specific, she confirmed: "we were close for a long time, and then when they were going through the divorce, yeah, we were entangled. … But she was also entangled with other people." When Theroux mentioned Elon Musk by name, Delevingne simply replied: "There you go."
Heard and Depp married in 2015 and Heard filed for divorce in 2016. Heard subsequently dated Musk until early 2018. The former couple faced each other in a highly publicized defamation trial in 2022. Heard has not appeared in a film since.
The podcast episode also covered Delevingne's views on marriage and her sexuality. She described knowing she was a lesbian as early as age 11. She told Theroux: "Well, now I look back on it, it was super evident really young. I knew at, like, 11 years old. I had this one friend that I was like, 'Oh, I think I care about her more than she likes me, and I don't know how, but I do.' It was obvious now, but then it really wasn't, and I'm very proud of it now."
She also discussed the impact of comments made to her early in her career by disgraced Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein. "Harvey Weinstein called me up and said, 'Are you gay?'" she recalled. "And I was like, 'Um, what do you mean?' And he was like, 'You should never be in a relationship with a woman… You'll never make it in the industry if people think you're gay.'" She added: "And I really believed him, and I really took that to heart."
Delevingne rose to prominence as a model before moving into acting, with roles in Paper Towns, Suicide Squad, and American Horror Story. She stars in Club Kid, a film by director Jordan Firstman that broke through at Cannes. Other guests on season seven of the podcast include filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos and actor Kyle MacLachlan.
