The brother of NFL veteran Calais Campbell was booked Wednesday morning on murder charges following the death of their mother, according to jail records reported by Yahoo Sports.

Ciarre Campbell, 41, was charged with aggravated assault, murder, and possession of a firearm or knife at Fulton County Jail. The arrest came hours after the Campbell family released a statement confirming their mother's death.

The statement read: "We are devastated to share that the Campbell Family has lost its matriarch, Mrs. Nateal Campbell. While the details of her passing are still being investigated, we take comfort in knowing she is reunited with our father, her beloved Chuck, and in the arms of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. We ask for privacy at this time so that we may honor her and share in our overwhelming grief privately and as a family."

Police responded to the scene after receiving a welfare call from a concerned family member, according to Lt. Christapher Butler, speaking to WSB-TV in Atlanta. Officers arrived to find Nateal Campbell, 71, dead. Butler did not identify who placed the call.

Butler also noted that the location had come to the attention of authorities before. "A brief look into the history does show some calls back in April dealing with this location a possible arson incident," he said. "There have been some indications of possible some mental health issues with an individual."

Calais Campbell, 39, is one of the most decorated defensive linemen of his generation. He was selected by the Arizona Cardinals in the second round of the 2008 NFL Draft and has since earned an All-Pro selection, six Pro Bowl appearances, and a spot on the NFL 2010s All-Decade Team. He was named the Walter Payton Man of the Year in 2019. After spending the 2025 season with the Cardinals, he signed with the Baltimore Ravens in May, beginning his second stint with the franchise. He is set to enter his 19th NFL season.
