The NBC superhero drama Heroes is now available on Netflix, giving the cult favorite its widest streaming reach since it ended its original run in 2010.

According to Screen Rant, the show drew 13.8 million viewers when its first season premiered, a number that dropped steadily over its four-season run. By the series finale, Variety had reported that viewership had fallen to 4.43 million. NBC cancelled the show after season four.

The road to that cancellation included several problems. The Writers Guild of America strike from 2007 to 2008 cut the second season in half. The show also made what Screen Rant described as major storytelling missteps significant enough that the series creator publicly apologized to fans, as reported by Entertainment Weekly.

Despite all of that, the show never entirely lost its audience. Heroes was one of the first live-action superhero television series not based on an existing comic book property. It built its own mythology and characters from scratch at a time when superhero stories had not yet taken over mainstream entertainment. In 2015, a follow-up miniseries called Heroes Reborn aired on NBC.

The show's arrival on Netflix follows a well-established pattern. Network television series that land on the platform frequently experience sharp spikes in viewership, a phenomenon that has been called the Netflix Effect. Breaking Bad, Suits, and You are among the shows that gained enormous new audiences after landing on the streaming service. Older titles like The Office and Gilmore Girls also found entirely new generations of viewers through Netflix.

Heroes has additional reasons to connect with a 2026 audience. Shows like The Boys and The Umbrella Academy, both of which owe a creative debt to Heroes, have made the ordinary-people-with-powers concept familiar and popular again. The original series, which predated both of those by years, may now benefit from comparisons it could not have received during its initial run.

The timing of the Netflix addition may also have implications beyond the back catalog. Screen Rant noted that a new project called Heroes: Eclipsed has been in development, and the show's presence on Netflix could increase the chances of that project moving forward.
