After an 18-month gap, Apple TV's Silo returns on July 3 with its third season, picking up one of streaming's more carefully constructed science fiction narratives. According to Collider, the new season will explore Juliette Nichols' amnesia and introduce a past timeline depicting the end of the world, which represents a significant expansion of the show's scope.

Season 2 left a great deal of ground to cover. Juliette, played by Rebecca Ferguson, spent much of the second season inside Silo 17, a neighboring structure she discovered after being sent outside in a hazmat suit at the end of season one. Thousands of corpses surrounded the exterior of Silo 17, but she managed to enter just as her suit's limited oxygen ran out.

Inside, she found the structure largely abandoned except for one man, Solo, played by Steve Zahn. Solo was outgoing but nervous, and driven by an intense need to keep the vault door to the IT department locked. He wanted companionship. Juliette wanted parts to build a new environmental suit so she could return home.

Over time, the pair's dynamic shifted. Juliette learned that humanity had built 50 silos in total before the dystopian era began. Solo's silo, designated Silo 17, had rebelled when Solo was a child. His father, Russell Conroy, the IT leader, locked him inside the password-sealed vault to protect him. When Russell refused to surrender the code, a raider executed him. Solo, whose real name was Jimmy, adopted another resident's name to avoid the painful reminders of his father's death.

The two were not alone. Three young adults and two children had been hiding from Juliette throughout, considering her presence a threat. They had spent years seeking revenge against Jimmy after he killed their parents when they tried to break into the vault. It was, for Jimmy, a frightened act of self-defense. For the children, it was a defining loss. Juliette brought the two sides together by sharing her own experiences with grief. Eventually, Jimmy opened the vault doors for everyone and provided Juliette with a functional environmental suit, the clearest signal of his growth across the season.

The show debuted in 2023 and has built a reputation as one of the more deliberate and carefully assembled genre series in the current streaming landscape. Season 3 premieres July 3 on Apple TV.
