BODY:

Billy Donovan is heading to San Antonio. The veteran coach has agreed to become the lead assistant coach for the San Antonio Spurs, according to a report from Yahoo Sports.

Donovan spent 11 seasons as a head coach in the NBA, first with the Oklahoma City Thunder and then with the Chicago Bulls. He now steps into a supporting role under head coach Mitch Johnson with the reigning Western Conference champions.

The move represents a significant shift for Donovan, who had long been the top name on the bench wherever he coached. Taking a lead assistant position with a team that just won the Western Conference title suggests a different kind of opportunity than running his own program.

The Spurs finished the 2025-26 season as the top team in the Western Conference, and adding a coach with Donovan's experience to Johnson's staff gives San Antonio one of the more accomplished assistant roles in the league. Donovan brings years of head coaching experience that could prove valuable in developing players and preparing game plans at a high level.

No additional details about the length or terms of the agreement were reported.
