Paul Pelosi, the 86-year-old husband of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, is suspected of striking a parked car and leaving the scene in Yountville, California on Friday afternoon, the Napa County Sheriff's Office said.
The incident happened around 2:30 p.m. on the 6700 block of Yount Street, according to CBS News. Yountville sits roughly 50 miles north of San Francisco. The vehicle Pelosi allegedly struck was unoccupied and legally parked. Deputies said it was left with major rear damage.
A witness told deputies that the driver briefly stopped after the collision and then left the scene. The vehicle was described as a brown-colored convertible. Deputies later found the suspect vehicle partially blocking Yountville Cross Road, with a California Highway Patrol vehicle already parked behind it.
When deputies identified the driver as Paul Pelosi, they noted the vehicle had significant damage on the front right side. Pelosi told deputies he had hit something but said he did not know what it was, so he kept driving. He said he continued until his car became disabled.
Investigators ruled out alcohol as a factor in the crash. Pelosi was not arrested, which the sheriff's office said was in keeping with misdemeanor arrest laws.
"A California DMV re-evaluation referral form will be submitted to DMV, which is common for elderly drivers," the sheriff's office said. The case was forwarded to the Napa County District Attorney's Office.
A spokesperson for the Pelosi family issued a statement to CBS News. "Mr. Paul Pelosi has personally apologized to the owner of the vehicle and assured them that he would take responsibility for the damage to their vehicle. Speaker Pelosi will not be commenting further on this private matter," the statement said.
Paul Pelosi was the victim of a violent and politically motivated attack at the couple's San Francisco home in October 2022.
