Dutton Ranch wrapped its first season on Paramount+ with a finale that left Carter kidnapped, Rob-Will dead, and Beth and Rip Dutton entangled with a cartel they didn't know they were working for. Before the dust settled, the show also confirmed a new showrunner for season 2.

Chad Feehan, who created the Yellowstone spinoff, was reportedly fired after creative clashes with Taylor Sheridan, star-executive producers Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser, and others. The show's renewal was confirmed just before the penultimate episode aired. Benjamin Cavell, known for the CBS series SEAL Team, was named as Feehan's replacement days later.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Hauser and Reilly spoke publicly about the transition for the first time. Hauser said a close friend who had worked with Cavell on SEAL Team had recommended him. He described the friend as "somebody that I trust with my life" after having "gone to boot camp together" and spent "a lot of time in the jungle together in Louisiana." After an early meeting with Cavell, Hauser said he got a look at how Cavell's mind works creatively. He expressed clear enthusiasm about what is ahead: "I cannot wait for this new iteration of Ben and his team of guys that he hires, along with David Glasser and the people who are involved, and to really sink our teeth into what this next show is going to be."

Reilly said she was looking forward to some rest after the press tour but confirmed she is already thinking through Beth's arc. She pointed to executive producer and director Cristina Voros as a key creative anchor for season 2 and called her a "lighthouse creative": "Everything we do goes through her brain because she's so brilliant, and she's going to be working with Ben. I feel like we've got a bit of an A-team."

Sheridan, who wrote every word of Beth Dutton's dialogue on Yellowstone but stepped back from that role on the spinoff, is expected to contribute story ideas in season 2. Reilly described signing on to Dutton Ranch without Sheridan writing for her as a genuine risk. "I was very uncertain of what this would be without his words. I didn't know if it was gonna work. I didn't know if she was going to work. It was like a part of the character had to die in order for me to begin her again," she told The Hollywood Reporter.

The gamble paid off. Dutton Ranch became the biggest original series debut in Paramount+ history. The season 1 finale, titled "El Padrino," moved the show from a sprawling ranch drama into a border thriller, ending with Carter being taken by cartel-connected men after a deadly shootout that also claimed the life of Beulah's son Rob-Will, played by Jai Courtney.

Natalie Alyn Lind, who plays Oreana, told Variety the finale hit her hard even on first read. Her character discovered she was pregnant and watched her father bleed out in front of her in the same episode. "When I saw that Rob-Will was killed, I genuinely started crying," Lind said. "It was a sadness just relating to the characters and seeing the scene prior, how special and important this person in her life is for her." She added that the trauma sets up new dimensions for Oreana going into season 2, including questions about how much she has always known about the family's criminal ties.

Questions left open by the finale include where Carter is being held, who fathered Oreana's child, and how Beulah will respond to the deaths and the fallout from the cartel alliance. Collider noted several unanswered threads heading into season 2, including the possibility that the show sends Beth and Rip to Mexico in pursuit of Carter.

Writers are expected to begin work on season 2 soon, with production slated to start in early 2027.
