Star Trek: Starfleet Academy has been canceled after one season, leaving the franchise with only three confirmed seasons of television remaining. According to Screen Rant, this marks the first time since 2017 that no new or returning Star Trek shows are reported to be in development.
The cancellation came after the season one finale aired in March. Season two had already wrapped filming in February before the decision was made, and that second and final season is expected to land on Paramount+ next year.
The only other Star Trek content confirmed for release is Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, which will air its fourth and fifth seasons. Season four premieres on Paramount+ later this month. The fifth and final season will be a reduced six-episode run, ending with James T. Kirk's early days as captain of the Enterprise and connecting directly to Star Trek: The Original Series. Strange New Worlds' sets were torn down and auctioned off in April, effectively ending speculation about any additional prequel projects set during that era.
The freeze on new development is tied to broader corporate changes at Paramount. The studio is currently navigating a pending merger with Warner Bros. Discovery and a recent consolidation with Skydance Media. Those pressures appear to have put franchise expansion on hold.
Starfleet Academy was positioned to fill a specific role in the franchise's future. Set at the end of the 32nd century, the show took place after the events of Star Trek: Discovery and was built around Starfleet rebuilding following a galaxy-wide catastrophe called the Burn. Roughly 120 years before Starfleet Academy's timeline, all dilithium in active warp cores was suddenly rendered inert, destroying thousands of ships and causing the Federation to collapse inward. The show's setting at the far edge of the current Star Trek timeline made it a natural launch point for new stories in a direction the franchise had not yet explored.
Strange New Worlds and Starfleet Academy were both created as spinoffs of Discovery, but they occupy opposite ends of the Star Trek timeline. Strange New Worlds is set in the years before The Original Series. Starfleet Academy was set centuries beyond any other current Trek property. That forward-facing position is now gone.
Season four of Strange New Worlds premieres on Paramount+ later this month. After that, the franchise's television future has no confirmed path beyond the two remaining seasons already in production.
