Manchester United have added veteran goalkeeper Karl Darlow to their roster, signing the 35-year-old on a free transfer after he declined a contract renewal at Leeds United.
Darlow agreed to a two-year deal with an option for a further 12 months at Old Trafford. He will serve as backup to first-choice goalkeeper Senne Lammens. According to Yahoo Sports, Darlow turned down a new offer from Leeds to make the move to United.
"I am extremely proud to sign for Manchester United," Darlow said. "I'm joining an excellent group of goalkeepers and I'm really looking forward to all pushing each other to ensure that we maintain the highest standards, which this club demands."
"This is a really special opportunity; everyone can see what an exciting time it is for the club and I cannot wait to play my part in supporting my team mates and helping to drive the group forwards."
Darlow joined Leeds ahead of the 2023-24 season and made 38 appearances for the club, including 22 in the Premier League. He holds 15 international caps for Wales and also has Premier League experience from his time with Newcastle.
Leeds acknowledged the departure in a brief statement. "Thank you Karl for your dedicated service to Leeds, we wish you and your family the best for the future," the club said.
The goalkeeper situation at Old Trafford has been in flux. Altay Bayindir, who had been serving as Lammens' backup, is expected to leave the club and has been linked with a return to Turkey. United also sent Andre Onana out on loan to Turkish side Trabzonspor earlier this month. Veteran goalkeeper Tom Heaton, 40, signed a new one-year deal earlier in the summer and remains with the squad.
Darlow's signing came one day after United confirmed the acquisition of Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos for £48 million. The club is also closing in on a move for Aston Villa midfielder Youri Tielemans after triggering his release clause. Manager Michael Carrick has been working to strengthen midfield options following the departure of Casemiro at the end of last season. Manuel Ugarte faces an extended absence after suffering a serious knee injury while representing Uruguay at the World Cup.
United open their Premier League season against newly promoted Hull City on August 22.
