Hundreds of travelers at Raleigh-Durham International Airport stopped and gathered at terminal windows on July 21 to honor a fallen American service member whose remains were being transferred on the tarmac below, according to a report by Fox News.
Video of the moment was shared by the White House on Instagram.
"BEAUTIFUL MOMENT: Hundreds of Americans at Raleigh-Durham International Airport stood in silence to honor a fallen service member as they returned home," the White House wrote Wednesday in a post on Instagram. "A grateful nation remembers. God bless our troops."
Many travelers were seen with their hands over their hearts. The video drew a wide response online, with commenters describing emotional reactions to the scene.
"This brought me to tears," one person wrote.
"There is hope for the USA. God bless our fallen heroes," another commenter added.
The United Service Organizations confirmed to Fox News Digital that its Raleigh-Durham Airport Center Honors Support Team assisted with a dignified transfer at the airport that day. The organization declined to identify the fallen service member.
"Out of respect for the service member, the family and military notification procedures, we are unable to provide additional information regarding the individual or the transfer," the USO said.
The organization described its role in supporting military families during transfers.
"When a service member makes their final journey home, our staff and volunteers are prepared to provide compassionate support to families and work alongside our military partners to help ensure a dignified transfer and the respectful honoring of our nation's fallen," the USO said.
The airport tribute came as the nation was mourning four U.S. service members recently killed during the war with Iran. Earlier that Wednesday, the Department of War's Rapid Response account announced that four Americans who had made the ultimate sacrifice had been welcomed home during dignified transfer ceremonies.
"Today, we welcomed home four brave Americans who made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation," the account wrote on X. "Their courage will never be forgotten."
