Imax reported $102.8 million in second quarter revenue, up 12 percent from $91.7 million in the same period last year, with Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey driving much of the gains.
Net income rose 30 percent to $15.9 million, compared to $12 million a year earlier. Adjusted earnings per share hit 43 cents, up 65 percent against a year-earlier 26 cents, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The Odyssey was shot entirely on Imax film cameras and has played exclusively on Imax's premium large format screens. Imax CEO Richard Gelfond described its performance as transformational, comparing its impact to James Cameron's Avatar franchise in earlier business cycles.
On a morning analyst call, Gelfond said, "The results for The Odyssey have been nothing short of tremendous. Odyssey delivered $52 million in its global opening — the biggest global opening weekend in our history on a like-for-like basis, given the film has yet to open in China, Japan, and South Korea. That amounted to a staggering 20 percent share of the film's worldwide debut, on less than 1 percent of total screens."
Technology products and services revenue, which includes the sale, lease, and maintenance of Imax theater systems, rose 16 percent to $65 million. Imax installed 38 theaters during the second quarter. Content solutions revenue, covering agreements with major studios and filmmakers, rose 2 percent to $35 million, driven by growth in international markets outside China.
Gelfond said the film will have a long run on Imax screens. "The Odyssey will play in Imax 70mm locations for months — and we're already recording sellouts at these locations deep into the film's run."
The Odyssey stars Matt Damon and Zendaya. Asked about whether other directors and studios would follow Nolan's lead in shooting on Imax cameras, Gelfond said, "Obviously we're getting good feedback, but we're not really leaving it at that. We have targeted goals that we're trying to make as we roll out our response to Odyssey."
Imax installed 38 theaters in the second quarter alone. The company has also announced a partnership with Bleecker Street on exclusive early access IMAX screenings for the upcoming George Michael concert film, set for release later in 2026.
