West Nile virus has been detected in the mosquito population in Wayne County, health officials announced. The detection marks a public health concern for residents heading into the height of summer mosquito season.
According to a report by CBS News, Wayne County health officials confirmed the presence of the virus after testing mosquitoes collected through surveillance traps in the area. West Nile virus is spread to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito, primarily mosquitoes from the Culex species. Most people infected with the virus do not develop symptoms, but a small percentage can develop serious neurological illness.
West Nile virus was first detected in the United States in 1999 in New York City. Since then it has spread across the country and become the leading mosquito-borne disease in the continental United States. The virus circulates between mosquitoes and birds, with humans and other mammals considered incidental hosts. Mosquitoes pick up the virus by feeding on infected birds and can then transmit it to humans.
Cases of West Nile in humans tend to follow the detection of the virus in mosquito populations by several weeks. Health officials typically use mosquito trap data as an early warning system to alert the public and guide decisions about spraying and other mosquito control measures.
The announcement came as temperatures in the region remain elevated, conditions that are favorable for mosquito breeding. Standing water, which accumulates in containers, gutters, and low-lying areas after rain, provides breeding habitat for mosquitoes that carry the virus.
Wayne County health officials did not immediately announce spraying plans following the detection, but residents were urged to take precautions to reduce mosquito exposure. Standard public health recommendations in such situations include wearing long sleeves and pants during peak mosquito activity hours around dawn and dusk, using EPA-registered insect repellents, and emptying standing water from around the home.
Older adults and people with weakened immune systems face a higher risk of developing severe illness if infected. Symptoms in those who do become sick can include fever, headache, body aches, and fatigue. Severe cases can involve inflammation of the brain or its surrounding tissue.
The county has not reported any confirmed human cases of West Nile virus at this time. Health officials said surveillance of the mosquito population would continue throughout the season.
