Charli xcx released a short film Friday to accompany her new album Music, Fashion, Film, shot entirely in black-and-white to match the album's aesthetic. The film had already been shown in theaters to audiences around the world before the album arrived, giving fans a chance to experience it visually as the artist intended.
According to Billboard, the film opens with what feels more like a journal entry than a traditional introduction, with Charli explaining her creative process behind the project.
"Throughout this album process, I've been making things with my friends and I've been loving every minute of it. I made the whole album with A.G. Cook and Finn Keane," she said. "Two people that have become my close, close friends through working on music and creating things together. I'm so excited for you to hear this album."
Every track on the album comes with its own music video. The visuals include mountains of cigarettes, fashion shoots, and scenes from London. Between each song, Charli provides context through the film's transitions. Ahead of the track "Card Declined," she discusses her love of shopping while traveling through cities like Paris and London.
Actor Vincent Cassel appears in the video for "Camera," which includes a recording of Charli's pitch to recruit him and his response. "It's kind of about the relationship between performer and camera that is sometimes really tempting and exciting, but can also sometimes be unbelievably vulnerable and a bit embarrassing," she said.
The album's closing track, "No One Lasts Forever," features director David Cronenberg. Charli gives a deeper look into a conversation she and Cronenberg had in Toronto about the mortality of life and its connection to art.
Music, Fashion, Film follows Charli's work on the Wuthering Heights soundtrack in February, which debuted at No. 8 on the Billboard 200, and her 2024 Brat album. She is scheduled to headline Lollapalooza on July 31 at Chicago's Grant Park, before launching a North American arena tour in September.
