Carson Kvapil finally broke through Saturday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, claiming his first career win in the Pennzoil 250 on the O'Reilly Auto Parts Series circuit. The victory came after five second-place finishes, including one at the previous race in Atlanta.
Kvapil drove the No. 1 Chevrolet Camaro for JR Motorsports, the team owned by NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt Jr. He led 23 laps total to take the win. Ross Chastain led the most laps in the race, 31 of 100, and finished in the top five along with fellow Cup Series regular Chase Elliott.
The win visibly affected Earnhardt, who got emotional in the aftermath. According to Fox News, Earnhardt is known as one of the most successful owners in the series' history, but Kvapil's first win carried a different weight.
"Oh, man; It's been a long time coming," Earnhardt said as he was getting choked up. "He's like a son almost. Y'know, you work with these guys for so long, and you work so hard... you just want them to have success."
Earnhardt also spoke to the practical stakes of winning in the series. "He's got to win to keep going," Earnhardt said. "You've got to win if you want to stay in this deal, and, man, he came close (before)."
The Pennzoil 250 was part of a busy racing weekend at Indianapolis. The Cup Series was also at the 2.5-mile oval, while the Craftsmen Truck Series raced at nearby Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park.
