Apple TV brought one of science fiction's most notoriously difficult novels to San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday, unveiling a first-look trailer and a January 22, 2027 premiere date for Neuromancer, its 10-episode adaptation of William Gibson's landmark 1984 debut novel.
According to Variety, the series follows a character named Case, played by Callum Turner, described in official materials as "a damaged, top-rung super-hacker who is thrust into a web of digital espionage and high stakes crime with his partner Molly, a razor-girl assassin to pull a heist on a corporate dynasty with untold secrets." Molly is played by Briana Middleton.
Turner did not appear in person at Comic-Con. Instead, according to Deadline, the BAFTA winner appeared via video to greet fans before the teaser played to the Hall H crowd. The trailer showed off elaborate sets built around a Japanese cyberpunk setting, with samurai influences, lighting effects, and fight sequences.
Gibson's novel won the Hugo, Nebula, and Philip K. Dick awards after its publication and is widely credited as one of the first works of the cyberpunk genre. For decades, the book was described as unadaptable, given its dense slang, large cast of characters, and ambitious vision of cyberspace. Apple issued a series order in February 2024.
The series was created by Graham Roland, who also serves as showrunner, and JD Dillard, who directed the first three episodes. The Wrap reported that Roland previously worked on Dark Winds, while Dillard directed The Twilight Zone. The production is a collaboration between Paramount Television Studios and Anonymous Content, with executive producers including Aubrey "Drake" Graham, Adel "Future" Nur, and William Gibson himself.
The main cast also includes Mark Strong, Joseph Lee, Peter Sarsgaard, and Clémence Poésy. Additional appearances come from Max Irons, Dane DeHaan, André De Shields, Isabella Pappas, and Emma Laird, among others.
Gibson's novel was the first book in what became the Sprawl trilogy, which also includes Count Zero, Mona Lisa Overdrive, and Burning Chrome. Variety noted there is no official word yet on whether Apple plans to adapt those follow-up novels, though the material exists if the streamer chooses to move forward.
The first two episodes will be available on January 22, 2027, with new episodes releasing weekly through March 19, 2027.
