A new study of Mandarin-speaking learners of English found that they do not use the same listening strategy for every English vowel contrast. The research, published in Second Language Research, shows that how learners hear unfamiliar sounds depends heavily on which sounds are being learned.
According to Phys.org, the researchers focused on two common English vowel pairs that give Mandarin speakers trouble: beat versus bit, and bat versus bet. English vowels differ along two main dimensions. One is vowel quality, which is shaped mainly by tongue position. The other is duration, meaning how long the vowel sound lasts.
The study found that Mandarin-speaking learners leaned on duration when distinguishing beat from bit, but switched to vowel quality when sorting out bat from bet. That difference in listening strategy showed up not just in how learners heard the sounds but also in how clearly they produced them when asked to imitate speech.
The researchers tested participants using speech stimuli in which vowel quality and duration were manipulated independently of each other. Participants completed both a categorization task and an imitation task. The results showed that the link between hearing and speaking was not the same across all sound contrasts. It depended on the specific vowel pair and the acoustic feature being tested.
Dr. Yu-An Lu, the study's corresponding author at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, said the findings point to something larger than English instruction. "Every language offers its speakers a particular way of organizing speech sounds," said Lu. "They bring with them the sound categories and listening strategies shaped by their first language. Understanding those influences helps us better understand how new speech categories are learned."
Previous research on whether listening and speaking are connected in second-language learners has produced mixed results. This study offers a more specific answer: the connection exists but varies by sound contrast and by which acoustic cue a learner relies on. That means a learner might handle one vowel pair well while struggling with another, even after years of exposure.
The study also challenges the idea that second-language learning is mainly about correcting errors. Instead, it suggests learners actively draw on knowledge from their first language to make sense of new sounds. That is not a flaw in the learning process. It is part of how the process works.
"This study is ultimately about more than English learning," said Lu. "It addresses a fundamental question in language science: how prior language experience shapes the way humans perceive, represent and produce speech sounds. Our findings show that these influences can be observed in both speech perception and speech production."
The researchers say the results have implications beyond the classroom. Educators, speech clinicians, and language researchers may all benefit from understanding that learners bring different listening frameworks to different sounds, and that those frameworks are tied directly to the structure of their first language.
