Dylan Cease was nearly untouchable Saturday. He threw a complete game one-hitter against the Boston Red Sox, striking out 12 and walking three as the Toronto Blue Jays won 6-0.
The Red Sox managed just one hit all afternoon. The Blue Jays, by contrast, collected 15. According to Yahoo Sports, Cease was not even throwing as hard as usual, which made the performance more striking.
Toronto broke the game open in the third inning with five runs and two outs. Nathan Lukes doubled. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. singled him home. Kazuma Okamoto singled. Then George Springer hit a home run to put the Jays up 5-0. Springer had committed a baserunning error earlier in the same inning, getting doubled off second when Ceddanne Rafaela caught a ball from Yohendrick Piñango in center field. The home run made up for it.
The Jays added one more in the ninth. Andrés Giménez led off with a single. Lukes doubled. Guerrero drove in a run on a ball that deflected off the pitcher, which likely saved the hit. Guerrero and Ernie each finished with three hits. Lukes, Springer, Travis Varsho, and Giménez had two each.
Cease finished with a game score of 0.27, earning Blue Jays of the Day honors alongside Springer at 0.26.
The Jays send Kevin Gausman to the mound Sunday for a 1:30 p.m. start. Gausman enters at 4-9 with a 4.91 ERA. Boston counters with Ranger Suarez, who is 4-3 with a 3.15 ERA.
