Autzen Stadium in Eugene, Oregon holds only 54,000 fans. That puts it well below many of the largest venues in college football. It did not stop USA Today from ranking it one of the five best stadiums in the country.
The publication placed Autzen at No. 5 on its list of the top college football stadiums, behind LSU's Tiger Stadium, Ohio State's Ohio Stadium, Penn State's Beaver Stadium, and Texas A&M's Kyle Field. Four USA Today writers collaborated on the ranking.
"Size doesn't matter in the case of Autzen Stadium," the writers wrote. "While only boasting a capacity of 54,000, Oregon's home field is one of the classes of the Big Ten and toughest places to play. The Ducks have lost just twice at home since hiring Dan Lanning in 2022. This stretch rivals the most dominant run of play at home in program history, a 21-game winning streak under former Chip Kelly that ended with a loss to Southern California in 2011."
Since Lanning arrived as head coach before the 2022 season, Oregon has gone 25-2 at home. The two losses came against Washington in 2022 and Indiana in 2025. That winning percentage at home has coincided with a broader rise in the program's national profile.
The Ducks' home record is not the only evidence of the stadium's impact. Oregon traveled to Ohio Stadium in 2021 and beat the Buckeyes 35-28. In 2024, Ohio State came to Eugene and lost by one point. Against Penn State last season, an Oregon interception sealed the game in double overtime, a moment that was widely seen as a turning point in the Nittany Lions' season.
Tiger Stadium and Kyle Field both hold significantly more fans than Autzen. LSU's stadium seats around 102,000. Texas A&M's Kyle Field holds over 100,000. The gap in raw capacity is large. The gap in noise and home-field effect is harder to measure, but Oregon's record at home makes a case of its own.
Lanning has also built a reputation as one of college football's top recruiters since arriving in Eugene, which has contributed to the quality of teams playing inside Autzen. The combination of a strong roster and a loud, compact stadium has made the Ducks difficult to beat on their home field regardless of the opponent.
The ranking covers all of college football, and placing a 54,000-seat stadium among venues that routinely draw 90,000 to 100,000 fans is a statement about atmosphere over size.
