Cody Bellinger is heading to the injured list.

The New York Yankees will be without their All-Star outfielder for four to six weeks due to a Grade 2 left hamstring strain, according to ESPN. The injury adds a new layer of urgency to a Yankees roster already trying to close ground on the Tampa Bay Rays in the AL East.

Bellinger has been one of the Yankees' most important bats in the lineup this season. His absence for potentially the next month and a half arrives at the worst possible time, with the MLB trade deadline approaching and New York needing production at multiple positions.

The Yankees were already dealing with a catching situation that ranked among the worst in the league. According to Baseball Reference data cited by Yahoo Sports, New York catchers have combined for negative 0.6 bWAR this season, ranking 21st in MLB. With Bellinger now out, the team faces a two-front problem heading into the deadline.

Yahoo Sports identified Ryan Jeffers as a potential trade target for New York, noting his 158 OPS+ as far above what any other catching option on the trade block could offer. The report described him as an immediate upgrade at the Yankees' most troublesome position, and noted that despite being a downgrade from some options in terms of catcher framing, Jeffers has still ranked as an above average catcher this year, placing 26th among all catchers in the league.

The Yankees do have prospects to move if they choose to be aggressive before the deadline. Whether Bellinger's injury accelerates those conversations remains to be seen.

The hamstring strain is classified as Grade 2, meaning partial tearing of the muscle. Recovery timelines for that type of injury can vary, and the four-to-six week window is an estimate. A return before the postseason is possible if Bellinger heals on the earlier end of that range, but any setback could push his return into October.

The Yankees currently sit behind the Rays in the AL East standings. Bellinger's timetable puts his earliest possible return in early to mid September, leaving the team to piece together outfield production through the heart of the pennant race without one of their key contributors.
