The Los Angeles Dodgers have acquired pitcher Tarik Skubal from the Detroit Tigers, a move first reported by ESPN late Saturday evening that immediately drew attention across Major League Baseball. The Dodgers sent outfielder Zyhir Hope and right-handed relievers Brady Smith and River Ryan to Detroit in exchange for the two-time American League Cy Young Award winner.

Hope, 21 years old, is currently ranked the No. 25 prospect in all of baseball by MLB. The package of three prospects was, according to Fox News reporting, the kind of return that most contending teams around the league could have also offered Detroit, which has added to frustration among fans of rival clubs.

Skubal, 29, had a complicated 2026 season before the trade. He underwent arthroscopic elbow surgery in May after making just seven starts for the Tigers to begin the year. He missed roughly six months before returning to the mound in mid-June. Since coming back, he has gone 7-5 as a starter. His last start for Detroit came on July 29.

The Tigers sit just 2.5 games out of a Wild Card spot in the American League, making the decision to trade Skubal a difficult one for Detroit's fan base to absorb. The Dodgers, meanwhile, carry a 69-42 record and a 10-game lead in the National League West. They are already considered the favorite to win what would be a third consecutive World Series title.

Skubal is set to become a free agent after the season ends. He is owed the remainder of a $32 million salary for 2026. Because the trade took place during the season rather than during an offseason, Skubal will not be eligible to receive a qualifying offer from Los Angeles.

His Dodgers debut could come within days. The team opens a three-game road series against the Chicago Cubs on Monday, and Skubal is eligible to pitch.

The acquisition adds one of the best starting pitchers in the American League to a Dodgers rotation that was already considered the deepest in the National League. For fans around the league, the deal represents another reminder of Los Angeles's financial and organizational advantages heading into the postseason.
