Hadestown: The Musical has passed Hamilton to become the highest-grossing live theater capture of a musical ever released in the United States. The film crossed that milestone in its second weekend in theaters.
According to Deadline, Hadestown grossed $2 million in week two on 1,567 screens, bringing its cumulative domestic total to $18.2 million. It landed at number six at the domestic box office. The film opened last weekend at $9.7 million on 1,949 screens.
Hamilton, released by Disney in theaters in September 2025 to mark the Broadway show's 10th anniversary, topped out at around $17 million domestically. It had previously debuted on Disney+ during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in July 2020, which likely limited its theatrical ceiling.
Hadestown was captured from the West End production and features the original principal cast.
Elsewhere in the specialty market, A24's The Invite passed the $20 million mark with a $1.2 million weekend on 792 screens in its seventh week. I Want Your Sex from Magnolia Pictures opened to $600,000 on 700 screens.
The weekend's strongest per-screen performer was The Samurai And The Prisoner, directed by Kiyoshi Kurosawa and distributed by Janus Films. The film grossed $64,200 on just three screens, marking the highest per-screen average of Kurosawa's career. It sold out shows at IFC Center, Film at Lincoln Center, and Landmark Nuart, and is set to expand to 20 screens next week before rolling out further through August.
A documentary about Flaco, the New York City owl that escaped the Central Park Zoo and became a viral sensation, also opened this weekend. Wild Inside, directed by Penny Lane, debuted exclusively at IFC with $20,000 and multiple sellouts. A world premiere last week in Central Park drew more than 1,300 people. The film expands to roughly 75 locations through August, with dozens of new engagements added on Tuesday to coincide with International Owl Awareness Day.
