Indiana announced Tuesday that defensive end Stephen Daley will return to Bloomington for a fifth season, giving the defending national champions one of their most important players back on the edge of their defensive line.
The return is made possible by a Colorado judge's ruling that grants an additional year of eligibility to the Class of 2022 under the NCAA's new five-for-five rule. According to CBS Sports, schools have been cautious in the wake of that ruling, uncertain whether an NCAA appeal could overrule the injunction and render players ineligible again. Indiana and Daley decided the potential reward outweighs that risk.
Daley's 2025 season ended early in the worst possible way. He suffered a freak knee injury while high-fiving fans after the Big Ten Championship, cutting short a season in which he had tallied 38 tackles, 19 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks. The Indiana defense held together during the Hoosiers' College Football Playoff run in his absence, and the program went on to win its first-ever national championship. But replacing Daley's ability to pressure quarterbacks and disrupt plays in the backfield had been one of the primary concerns entering the 2026 season.
Indiana responded to that concern aggressively in the transfer portal. The Hoosiers added Chiddi Obiazor and Tobi Osunsanmi from Kansas State and Josh Burnham from Notre Dame to build depth on the outside of their defensive line. Now head coach Curt Cignetti and defensive coordinator Bryant Haines will deploy that entire group alongside Daley, turning what was a weakness entering the offseason into a potential strength.
The Hoosiers were ranked sixth in the preseason Coaches Poll released Tuesday. Much of the preseason attention has centered on the offense, specifically how transfer quarterback Josh Hoover from TCU will perform as the replacement for Heisman Trophy winner Fernando Mendoza, and whether new star receiver Nick Marsh can step into a featured role. Defense, however, has been the foundation of Indiana's rise under Cignetti, and the returning pieces on that side of the ball are substantial.
Along the defensive line, star tackle Tyrique Tucker also returns. In the secondary, Jamari Sharpe is back. Sharpe delivered a late interception that sealed Indiana's national title win over Miami. The Hoosiers also added A.J. Harris from Penn State to help replace departed cornerback D'Angelo Ponds.
Daley's return gives Indiana's defense continuity at its most disruptive position heading into a season where the program will carry a target on its back as defending champions.
