The MLB trade deadline moved a wave of notable prospects, and several of them figure to matter quickly at the major league level.
According to CBS Sports, outfielder Zyhir Hope of the Detroit Tigers leads the group of seven best overall prospects traded before Monday's deadline. Hope came to Detroit from the Dodgers as part of the Tarik Skubal trade. He is currently posting a .291 batting average with 23 home runs, 18 stolen bases, and an .893 OPS across 375 at-bats at the Double-A level. In July alone, he batted .372 with 10 homers, six steals, and a 1.184 OPS.
Some prospect ranking lists put Hope outside the top 50. CBS Sports placed him closer to the top 25, citing his ability to impact the ball like a legitimate slugger, his athleticism on the bases, and his approach at the plate.
Right-handed pitcher Anthony Eyanson also drew attention after being dealt to the Baltimore Orioles from the Boston Red Sox in the Adley Rutschman trade. Eyanson was drafted in the third round last year and has posted a 1.32 ERA, 0.89 WHIP, and 94 strikeouts across 68 and one-third innings split between Class A Advanced and Double-A. Baseball America ranked him 34th in its latest top 100. His velocity has reportedly slipped slightly from the start of the season, but a 19 percent swinging-strike rate across two stops has kept his results dominant.
Shortstop Arjun Nimmala moved from the Toronto Blue Jays to the Los Angeles Angels as part of the Jose Soriano trade. Nimmala was drafted 20th overall in 2023 for his power upside and defensive ability at shortstop. He is 20 years old and has put up a .265 average with 8 home runs and a .817 OPS across four levels this season. CBS Sports noted that progress has been incremental and that the Angels will now be responsible for developing his ceiling.
Right-handed pitcher River Ryan also landed with the Tigers from the Dodgers in the Skubal deal. Ryan had been working his way back from Tommy John surgery and was building a strong case in Triple-A before a hamstring strain sent him to the injured list. Before that setback, he had posted a 2.81 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, and 11.3 strikeouts per nine innings. Injuries and the Dodgers' deep rotation kept his rookie status intact all the way to age 27, making him a divisive figure among evaluators, though some consider him a major league-ready starter.
