David Fincher has long pointed to money as the reason Mindhunter never returned for a third season. Now, Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos is offering a different explanation, according to Collider.
Mindhunter ran for two seasons on Netflix and earned widespread critical acclaim. After Season 2 aired in 2019, the show went on an indefinite hiatus. Fincher eventually confirmed the project was dead, citing the cost of production relative to its viewership.
"I'm very proud of the first two seasons. But it's a very expensive show and, in the eyes of Netflix, we didn't attract enough of an audience to justify such an investment," Fincher said in a 2023 interview with Forbes. "I don't blame them; they took risks to get the show off the ground, gave me the means to do Mank the way I wanted to do it, and they allowed me to venture down new paths with The Killer. It's a blessing to be able to work with people who are capable of boldness. The day our desires are not the same, we have to be honest about parting ways."
In a separate interview with Vulture, Fincher was equally blunt about the economics. "Listen, for the viewership that it had, it was an expensive show. We talked about 'Finish Mank and then see how you feel,' but I honestly don't think we're going to be able to do it for less than I did Season 2. And on some level, you have to be realistic about dollars have to equal eyeballs."
Sarandos has now pushed back on that framing. He said he would have wanted the show to continue and that budget was not actually the biggest factor in the decision not to renew. The co-CEO's comments shift the focus away from cost and toward Fincher himself as the reason the series never continued.
Mindhunter followed FBI agents who interviewed imprisoned serial killers to build criminal profiles. The show is considered one of the stronger entries in the prestige television era of streaming, and its unresolved ending has frustrated fans for years.
