The CBS series Marshals is adding new faces and bringing back a familiar one for its second season. According to Deadline, Marque Richardson, known for his work on Unprisoned and Dear White People, will recur as Assistant U.S. Attorney Patrick Burns. Morgan Lindholm will also return in an expanded version of her role as Maddie, the bartender at local bar Bullet 'N Barrel and the estranged daughter of Cal, played by Logan Marshall-Green.
Production on season 2 began in Park City, Utah, in June. Lead Luke Grimes is confirmed to return, along with Tatanka Means as Miles and Ash Santos as Andrea. New episodes are expected to air this fall.
The show is produced by Paramount Television Studios and 101 Studios and is executive produced by Taylor Sheridan, among others. It centers on Kayce Dutton, the character Grimes originated on Yellowstone, who has left the ranch behind to join an elite unit of U.S. Marshals. The series leans on his dual background as a cowboy and Navy SEAL as he and his team work to hold the line against violence in Montana, while also managing the personal costs that come with the job.
Season 1 ended on a significant cliffhanger. Supervisory Deputy U.S. Marshal Pete Calvin and Deputy U.S. Marshal Isabel Skinner-Turek were left in imminent danger after being led to a house where two armed men opened fire on them. The fates of those characters heading into season 2 have not been confirmed.
Despite the unresolved danger, Santos, who plays Deputy U.S. Marshal Andrea Cruz, has been photographed on set alongside Means, confirming she will appear at least in the season 2 premiere, titled "All Hat No Cattle." There had been speculation at the end of season 1 that her character might leave Montana, but those photos appear to put that storyline on hold, at least temporarily.
Season 2 may also pick up threads from Dutton's personal life. The show has hinted at potential romantic directions, including a moment in episode 9 where Dutton and Andrea appeared to grow closer, and another involving Dolly Weaver, played by Ellyn Jameson, whom Dutton comforted after an accident involving country star Riley Green's character Garrett. The season 1 finale also set up a potential relationship between Dutton and Weaver more explicitly.
Season 1 averaged 20.4 million multiplatform viewers for its first eight episodes, according to Nielsen.
Marshals also features Arielle Kebbel as Belle Skinner, Brecken Merrill as Dutton's son Tate, Mo Brings Plenty as Mo, and Gil Birmingham as Thomas Rainwater, characters who carried over from the Yellowstone universe.
