The director behind the Smile films has a new horror project locked in. Parker Finn will helm a remake of Andrzej Żuławski's 1981 film Possession for Paramount, with a release date now officially set for June 11, 2027, according to Collider.
The announcement that Finn would direct the remake was first made in June 2024. The new release date puts the film in direct competition with Universal's live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon 2 on the same day.
The original Possession is a mind-altering film that starred Isabelle Adjani in a performance widely regarded as one of the all-time great horror turns, alongside the late Sam Neill. Żuławski poured his avant-garde sensibility into the project, and the film has since become required viewing in horror circles.
Paramount's timing is not accidental. This year's Obsession, which stars Inde Navarrette as Nikki Freeman and is widely regarded as a spiritual successor to Possession, has been a major success. Navarrette's star-making performance drew direct comparisons to Adjani's original work, and the film's strong reception gave Paramount reason to push the remake into a prime summer slot.
Finn built his reputation frightening audiences with the Smile franchise. Whether his approach to Possession will honor the chaos and psychological intensity of Żuławski's original or chart a different path remains to be seen. No casting has been announced.
The June 2027 date places the film squarely in summer blockbuster territory, a significant vote of confidence from the studio.
