Warner Bros. has officially confirmed that Hogwarts Legacy 2 is in active development, the company announced in a new letter to shareholders. According to Collider, the follow-up to the 2023 open-world role-playing game was singled out as one of the video game titles the company is banking on most heavily going forward.
"We expect Games to more meaningfully contribute to segment profitability going forward as our pipeline expands, including the second installment of Hogwarts Legacy," the letter reads.
The confirmation was widely expected. The original Hogwarts Legacy is now among the top-25 bestselling games of all time, with over 40 million copies sold. It also became the first game to outsell a Call of Duty or Rockstar title in a single year since 2009, a benchmark that underscored just how much appetite exists for Harry Potter content in the gaming space.
No release date, platform details, or story information has been revealed about the sequel at this time.
The announcement comes as the Harry Potter franchise is expanding across multiple formats simultaneously. HBO's large-scale television adaptation of J.K. Rowling's book series is set to debut its first season this Christmas, featuring an entirely new cast. Production on the second season, based on Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, is already underway. Actor Nicholas Hoult, known for playing Superman, has been added to the cast as Professor Gilderoy Lockhart.
Warner Bros. appears to be working toward a strategy that would align the sequel game's release with the ongoing run of the HBO series, which is expected to cover all of Rowling's books over its full run. If the timing holds, the game could launch into a period of heightened public interest in the wizarding world across television and other media.
How the sequel will handle the continued controversy surrounding J.K. Rowling, which affected the reception of the original game in some quarters, remains to be seen. Warner Bros. has not addressed that question in its shareholder communications.
For now, the confirmation settles what had been an open question for fans of the first game, even if almost everything else about Hogwarts Legacy 2 remains unknown.
