Negotiations between Bayern Munich and Aston Villa for midfielder Joao Palhinha collapsed Friday, opening the door for Newcastle United to re-enter the transfer. Bayern sporting director Max Eberl confirmed the breakdown publicly.
"You've read that Aston Villa contacted us regarding Joao. That is true, but we won't reach an agreement with Aston Villa," Eberl said. "It simply won't work. We aren't in a position where we have to do everything others try to impose on us."
The sticking point was the structure of the deal. Aston Villa wanted to take Palhinha on loan. Bayern is seeking approximately 30 million euros for a permanent sale, a position made firmer by the fact that the club paid around 51 million euros to sign him from Fulham in 2024. Eberl left no room for interpretation on where things stand with Villa.
"There's no chance of an agreement," he said of the loan proposal.
Following the collapse, Marca reporter Diego Pico reported that Newcastle moved quickly. According to Yahoo Sports, Pico wrote that Newcastle "entered strongly" in the situation, offering both a permanent transfer and a three-year contract. Pico posted on social media that Aston Villa had "ran out of options."
Newcastle's offer aligns with what Bayern wants. The Magpies are prepared to make the permanent transfer Bayern is demanding, which Aston Villa was not willing to do. Manager Matthias Jaissle has been trying to add an experienced midfielder to a squad that Newcastle has identified as lacking leadership.
There is one significant obstacle remaining. CNN Portugal reported that Palhinha's own preference is to return to the Premier League only through Aston Villa. He has already rejected a potential move to Newcastle. That puts the situation at a standoff: Bayern has closed the door on Villa, Newcastle is offering the terms Bayern wants, and the player himself does not want to go to Tyneside. How those three positions get resolved remains unclear heading into the weekend.
