Sydney Sweeney's 2025 crime thriller Americana is having a second life on HBO Max. According to Collider, the film is currently one of the ten most-streamed movies on the platform worldwide, a list topped by the 2026 fantasy sequel Mortal Kombat II.
The turnaround is notable. Americana premiered at the 2023 South by Southwest Film Festival but waited two years before getting a wide theatrical release. Against a reported budget of $9 million, the film failed to make even $1 million at the box office, making it the biggest box office bomb of Sweeney's career to date, arriving at a moment when she was at the height of her fame.
The film co-stars Paul Walter Hauser, singer Halsey, and the late Eric Dane, who was also Sweeney's co-star on Euphoria. Dane's presence gives the film added weight for fans of the HBO series.
Sweeney, 28, broke through with roles in The Handmaid's Tale, Sharp Objects, and Everything Sucks before Euphoria made her a household name. Earlier this year she returned for Euphoria's third season, which generated significant controversy directed at creator Sam Levinson. The season was nonetheless a major streaming success.
Sweeney's film career has been a mix of hits and misses. Despite Americana's theatrical failure, its performance on HBO Max suggests the audience for the film simply arrived late, drawn perhaps by the platform and her continued high profile.
