Your phone is not listening to your conversations. But it may know more about you than you think.
According to a report by Engadget, the technology industry has built what the outlet describes as a staggeringly sophisticated mechanism that captures nonverbal signals from users and converts them into advertising revenue. Those signals include how fast a person scrolls through a webpage, which Wi-Fi or cellular network their device is connected to, and how they arrived at a given piece of content, whether through a search engine or a link shared on social media. Individually, those details seem minor. Combined over time, they build a detailed profile of a person's habits, preferences, and likely purchasing behavior.
The report addresses a widespread belief that smartphones secretly record conversations to serve targeted ads. It pushes back on that idea, noting that the real explanation is more technical and, in some ways, more unsettling. The nonverbal signals that apps collect are, according to the report, more useful to advertisers than audio recordings would be.
Central to how this tracking works is the device-level identifier, a unique code assigned to each smartphone, laptop, or tablet. Data-collecting apps can tie the information they gather to this identifier and share it across multiple apps on the same device, allowing companies to aggregate behavior from many sources into a single profile. This is how an ad for a product can follow a user from one app to another.
The two major mobile operating systems handle this differently. On Android, users are opted into identifier-based tracking by default. On Apple's iOS, a framework called App Tracking Transparency, or ATT, requires apps to ask permission before accessing the device identifier. The distinction matters because most people do not change default settings, meaning Android users are more likely to be tracked without taking any action to allow it.
The report notes that most people are at least vaguely aware their activity is being tracked, even if they cannot name all the specific signals involved. Most also express discomfort with the practice, even if they cannot describe the precise consequences.
Managing these permissions is possible but requires active effort. Blocking device-level tracking is described as the most effective single step a user can take, though the report acknowledges it is far from the only form of tracking in use. Apps can also collect data through location permissions, contact list access, microphone and camera permissions, and through third-party code embedded in the app itself, often without the user being aware of what is being collected or how it is being used.
The issue sits at the center of ongoing debates about data privacy regulation in the United States and elsewhere. As of now, no federal law in the U.S. requires apps to disclose the full scope of data collection in plain language or gives users a universal right to opt out of all forms of tracking.
