Google has built a set of automatic theft-detection tools into Android, and most phone owners already have access to them without downloading anything new.

The features are part of what Google calls its Theft Protection suite, according to Engadget. They are bundled into Google Play Services and available on any device running Android 10 or newer. Some budget devices running Android Go Edition, Android tablets, and phones without the full range of Google Play Services may not have access to all of the features.

The most significant addition is Theft Detection Lock. The feature uses motion sensors and sudden disconnection indicators to recognize when a phone may have been grabbed and taken. If the phone detects aggressive or sudden movement consistent with a snatch theft, it locks the screen automatically without requiring any input from the owner.

A second feature called Offline Device Lock addresses a different scenario. If a thief pulls the SIM card or switches the phone to Airplane Mode to cut off tracking, the screen locks shortly after the connection drops. The feature does not need a live connection to trigger.

A third tool, Remote Lock, allows users to lock their phone from any browser by visiting android.com/lock, entering their phone number, and following the steps provided. This works even if the thief has moved the phone to a different network, and it operates independently from Google's Find Hub app.

The settings are not buried deep in any phone's menu. For Samsung users, the path runs through Settings, then Security and Privacy, then Lost Device Protection, then Theft Protection. For Google Pixel phones, the path goes through Settings, then Security and Privacy, then Device Unlock, then Theft Protection. Exact menu labels may vary between device manufacturers.

The tools are designed to avoid false positives. Usage limitations and active use checks help prevent the system from locking a phone during normal activity. A user jogging with their phone in hand, for example, would not trigger the theft detection.

Engadget noted that the protections are most effective when combined with basic security habits. A PIN, biometric login, and a strong password remain essential. Without them, the theft detection features cannot do their job fully, since a thief who can access an unlocked phone bypasses most of what the suite is designed to prevent.
