A new romance series on Prime Video is drawing strong reviews, with Sterling Point earning an 89 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes. According to Screen Rant, the show stands out in a crowded streaming genre by growing stronger as its season progresses.
The series was created by Megan Park, the writer and director behind The Fallout and My Old Ass. Sterling Point follows Ella Rubin's character Annie Jacobson, who inherits an island from her estranged grandfather. The show is set in the early 2000s and runs eight episodes in its first season.
Critics drew early comparisons to Dawson's Creek, while others saw similarities to The Summer I Turned Pretty in its story of a young woman caught between two potential life paths. Sterling Point sits alongside those shows in a genre that has expanded rapidly since Netflix's Bridgerton became a major hit in 2020.
What separates Sterling Point from some of its competitors, according to reviewers, is its restraint. The show does not rely on massive cliffhangers or jaw-dropping revelations at the end of each episode. Instead, it builds through character. Rubin's central performance has been called charming, and she is supported by screen veterans Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Missi Pyle, along with newcomers Daniel Quinn-Toye and Bo Bragason.
The romance genre on streaming has grown to rival science fiction and action thrillers as one of the biggest categories available to viewers. Netflix alone has contributed shows across several romance subgenres, from the historical fantasy Bridgerton to the long-running small-town series Virgin River, which is based on author Robyn Carr's novel series and has run for eight seasons. The CW's Sullivan's Crossing, also based on a Carr novel series, has run five seasons.
Sterling Point's slower pacing is both a risk and a deliberate choice. The show takes time to establish Annie's world before the story accelerates, and that patience appears to be paying off with critics. The series has been described as more believable and grounded than comparable shows, with Annie's story shaped by gradual discovery rather than dramatic plot turns.
Park's background as a filmmaker known for quiet, emotionally precise work appears to carry through to the series. Sterling Point is available now on Prime Video.
