Jensen Ackles is coming back to Tracker.
Justin Hartley, who stars as Colter Shaw on the CBS series, confirmed that Ackles will return as Colter's older brother Russell Shaw when the show kicks off its fourth season. Tracker season 4 premieres October 4, according to Screen Rant.
The confirmation was welcome news for viewers who were left uncertain after Russell's exit during the season 3 finale. Ackles has appeared in six episodes of Tracker across its run, and his appearances have built a consistent following among fans of the series. Hartley shared that Ackles would be returning to set in the coming weeks, meaning Russell will likely appear in early episodes of the new season.
Tracker has seen significant casting changes since its debut. The show's original handlers, Teddi, played by Robin Weigert, and Velma Bruin, played by Abby McEnany, departed early. Original hacker Bobby Exley, played by Eric Graise, also left without explanation at first, and his cousin Randy, played by Chris Lee, stepped in as a replacement. Those shifts put pressure on the show's continuity and left some viewers uncertain about what to expect heading into season 4.
Russell's return matters in part because of what the character represents. He connects Colter to the broader Shaw family history and to the secrets the show has been building around that background. That kind of connective tissue, according to Screen Rant, has become more important as the series continues to evolve around a central character who largely carries the weight of each episode on his own.
Season 4 is already being described as another period of change for the series. With Ackles back in the mix, the show has at least one familiar and popular thread to hold onto when it returns this fall.
