Dave Bautista has officially closed his deal to play Kratos in Prime Video's God of War series, stepping in to replace Ryan Hurst after a serious injury forced the original lead out of the project. According to Collider, Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television approached the WWE Hall of Famer shortly after deciding the role needed to be recast.

Hurst tore his bicep while performing a stunt in late June, four months into the Vancouver shoot. The production will now essentially start again from scratch, with footage filmed during Hurst's time as Kratos not expected to be used. Preparation for the restarted production begins this month, ahead of filming resuming in Vancouver in mid-October.

Emmy-winning director Frederick E.O. Toye, who directed the original first two episodes, will return to direct those same episodes again with Bautista in the lead role. Toye previously won the Emmy for his work on Shōgun.

The recasting represents a significant disruption for a production that was already four months into filming when Hurst's injury occurred. For any television series, losing a lead actor mid-production would be considered a major setback. For a show built around one of gaming's most recognizable characters, the stakes are considerably higher.

Bautista does not have much time to prepare physically for what will be a demanding role, but he recently bulked up to play the Kurrgan in Highlander opposite Henry Cavill. The God of War character Kratos is known for his imposing physical presence, a quality Bautista has already demonstrated across his career, including his years in professional wrestling and his role as Drax in the Guardians of the Galaxy films.

The live-action adaptation is based on Sony's long-running PlayStation franchise, which has sold tens of millions of copies worldwide. The series carries significant expectations from a fanbase that has followed the franchise across multiple console generations and storylines.

Production is now set to resume in Vancouver in mid-October with Bautista in the lead.
