Joe Burrow got into a scuffle at joint practice Thursday and then made it clear he had no regrets. Not about the fight. Not about the urgency he has been preaching to his teammates all offseason. And not about calling 2026 the year the Cincinnati Bengals make it happen.

According to CBS Sports, the incident started when Bears defensive end Dayo Odeyingbo got his hands on Burrow and would not let go of his jersey. Burrow was not happy. He let Odeyingbo know it. Teammates rushed in before anything escalated further. When asked about it afterward, Burrow gave a brief answer.

"Shit happens," the Bengals QB said. "That's how practice goes sometimes."

He also admitted this was the first time since his college days that he had been in any kind of on-field scuffle.

"Fun to go at it a little bit," he said.

Wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase made clear the locker room was watching and ready. "I don't care what we do, we just better f---ing protect Joe," Chase said after practice.

The scuffle was not the only story coming out of Thursday's session in Cincinnati. Burrow, who has been changing his leadership style this offseason, delivered some of the sharpest remarks he has made yet about what this season means to him and the franchise. He has been pushing a message of urgency for months, but his comments Thursday drew wider attention.

"The urgency is very high in the locker room, you can feel it," Burrow said. "It's palpable."

He went further when asked directly if this was a now-or-never season for the Bengals. Yahoo Sports reported that Burrow did not back away from the question.

"I'm trying to put it out into the world. I'm trying to manifest it," Burrow told reporters after practice. "I'm trying to show our guys the urgency that I have and that I want us to have as an organization to go and make it happen."

He continued: "You can keep pushing it down the road, or you can talk about it now and say, 'This is the year.' And I'm tired of saying, 'Next year, next year, next year.' This is it. Life is too short to keep pushing things down the road. I'm trying to instill some urgency and some intensity in everybody to go and be great every day and try to go make it happen."

The joint practice had an added layer of family drama. Bengals head coach Zac Taylor's younger brother, Press Taylor, serves as the Bears' offensive coordinator. The Bengals defense, which added four new starters this offseason including Dexter Lawrence, got its first real test against a full opposing offense. By most accounts, it passed. Chicago quarterback Caleb Williams struggled against the new-look Cincinnati unit throughout the session.

Burrow's performance was not perfect. He threw one interception on the day, and CBS Sports noted it came on the very play that sparked the scuffle. His pass bounced off tight end Mike Gesicki and was picked off by a Chicago defensive back.

Despite that, the mood in the Bengals camp Thursday was described as feisty and focused. The defense looked ready. The quarterback looked ready. And the message coming out of Cincinnati is that the team has grown tired of waiting.

The Bengals' preseason continues as the regular season approaches, with Burrow making sure no one in that locker room forgets what is at stake.
