Justin Timberlake had planned to spend Saturday night watching Don Toliver perform. The crowd had other plans.
On August 22, at Kaseya Arena in Miami, Toliver invited Timberlake onstage during his Octane world tour headlining show. According to Billboard, an Instagram video from the event first shows Timberlake in the VIP section, bobbing his head as Toliver performed. Then he appeared on the stage. The caption on the post read: "I just wanted to watch the show from the VIP."
Timberlake performed his 2003 single "Rock Your Body," then stayed on for Toliver's song "Body," which samples the track from Timberlake's 2002 debut album Justified. Dressed in baggy black pants, an oversized cream-colored shirt, and a khaki baseball hat, Timberlake danced, hyped the crowd, and added harmony vocals on the hook while Toliver retook the spotlight.
Before running offstage, Timberlake addressed the crowd directly. "I love you guys. The biggest rock star on the planet! Don Toliver!" he said.
The appearance marked a rare public moment for Timberlake, who has been largely off the radar since wrapping his Forget Tomorrow world tour in Istanbul, Turkey last July. During that tour, he revealed he had been managing the effects of Lyme disease.
Earlier this year, in January, he made a similar surprise appearance at the Recording Academy Honors Black Music Collective event in Los Angeles, which honored his frequent collaborator Pharrell. At that show he performed several hits including "Señorita," "Rock Your Body," and "Like I Love You."
