A four-part docuseries about the murder of Florida attorney and law professor Dan Markel premieres on Hulu on September 1. According to Deadline, the series is titled Welcome to the Family: The Murder of Dan Markel and examines what the network describes as the "dark secrets of a wealthy family centered around the brutal murder."
Markel was killed in Tallahassee, Florida in a murder-for-hire motivated by child custody disputes following his divorce from his wife, Wendi Adelson. Five people have been convicted in the case: Wendi Adelson's mother Donna Adelson, her brother Charlie Adelson, Sigfredo Garcia, Katherine Magbanua, and Luis Rivera. Wendi Adelson herself was not charged, though prosecutors named her as an "unindicted co-conspirator."
The series features exclusive audio from a recorded conversation between FBI agent Pat Sanford and Rob Adelson, the oldest son of the Adelson family. Rob Adelson has been estranged from his family for years and testified against his own mother, Donna, at her trial.
First-time interviews in the series include Sanford, who spent half his career working to solve the case, and June Umchina, the ex-girlfriend of Charlie Adelson. Umchina is said to reveal the inside story of their relationship and what Charlie told her about Dan Markel's murder.
The series is produced by Curious Films for ABC News Studios. It is directed by Sebastian Smith and produced by Lily Fletcher. Executive producers are Curious Films' Dov Freedman and Charlie Russell, and ABC News Studios' David Sloan and Claire Weinraub.
Curious Films is a British production company previously behind Sky's Boyzone: No Matter What and Disney+'s Caroline Flack: Search for the Truth, as well as Netflix documentaries A Toxic Love Story, Lover, Stalker, Killer, and The Man with 1000 Kids.
The series premieres September 1 on Hulu.
