Annette O'Toole played Martha Kent on Smallville for six seasons before leaving the series in a departure that was, by her own account, a straightforward decision. Her contract was up, the work had become less interesting, and the distance from Los Angeles to Vancouver had worn her down.
According to Screen Rant, O'Toole was not even in the original pilot. Cynthia Ettinger played Martha Kent in that episode, but Ettinger and the producers agreed she was not the right fit, and they approached O'Toole as a replacement. O'Toole was initially reluctant. She had already appeared in Superman III and felt she had done that kind of role before. After watching the pilot, however, she changed her mind and signed on for six seasons.
The role gave O'Toole space to develop Martha Kent in ways that other versions of the character had not. While iterations like the DCEU's Martha Kent appeared briefly and with limited context, the Smallville version was built out over years, exploring her motivations and her influence on the boy who would become Superman. Much of that development was tied to the character's relationship with Jonathan Kent, played by John Schneider, who left the series after five seasons.
Schneider's departure shifted what Martha Kent had to do on the show, and O'Toole noticed. Speaking with the Daily Planet, she said the role had grown stagnant. "As time went on for the series, it was a little frustrating that there wasn't more for Martha to do," she said.
By the time her contract ended, the answer was clear. "I signed for six years and did that and that was enough... [t]he travel had taken its toll," she told the Daily Planet, referring to the distance to the Vancouver filming location.
O'Toole also addressed the quality of the later work in an appearance on Michael Rosenbaum's podcast Inside of You. "It wasn't interesting work," she said, reflecting on how her storylines had narrowed to little more than checking in on her son.
O'Toole was born in Texas and moved to Los Angeles at 13, where she eventually chose between careers in dancing and acting, opting for the latter. Her career has included numerous films and television series beyond Smallville.
