Michael Bay's Armageddon is leaving Peacock in September, giving subscribers limited time to watch the 1998 disaster film before it disappears from the platform. The film was released to mixed reviews but found a massive audience. Bay followed it with Pearl Harbor, which made nearly $450 million globally, cementing his reputation as one of Hollywood's most reliable commercial directors of the era.
According to Collider, Bay has not released a major theatrical film since Transformers: The Last Knight in 2017. His last big-budget production was the Netflix action film 6 Underground in 2019, followed by the action thriller Ambulance in 2022. He has since directed a documentary feature, his first, but has not returned to the large-scale blockbuster format he spent decades defining.
The departure of Armageddon from Peacock leaves the streaming landscape with one fewer option for fans of Bay's work from that period. The film starred Bruce Willis, Ben Affleck, and Billy Bob Thornton, and remains among the most-referenced films of its decade, both as a spectacle and as a cultural artifact of late-nineties Hollywood excess.
