Viktor Hovland stands one round away from the FedExCup title and a $10 million payday.
Hovland grabbed the solo lead at the Tour Championship on Saturday with a 5-under 65, closing his round with four birdies in his final six holes. He went up-and-down out of a bunker on the 18th hole to finish at 15-under par, according to Yahoo Sports. Ryan Gerard sits one stroke back at 14-under heading into Sunday's final round.
The final round begins at 1:30 p.m. ET on CBS.
Behind the top two, a logjam has formed at 12-under. Adam Scott, Ludvig Aberg, Scottie Scheffler, and Chris Gotterup are all tied for third, three strokes off the lead. Rory McIlroy and Cameron Young share seventh place at 10-under, five back.
Scheffler, the world's top-ranked golfer, posted a 4-under 66 on Saturday without a bogey. He was visibly frustrated at times on the course but enters the final round in a strong position after dealing with health issues earlier in the season. He will be paired with Gotterup on Sunday.
The biggest move of the day belonged to McIlroy. He entered the third round near the bottom of the field, sitting 23rd after 36 holes. He then bogeyed the second hole of his third round, a start that did not suggest what was coming. Over the next 16 holes, he posted a 7-under 63 to sign his scorecard in a share of the lead. His early tee time meant the leaders eventually passed him, leaving him at 10-under and five strokes back heading into Sunday.
The difference on Saturday was McIlroy's putter. It had ranked 25th in the field during his mistake-filled second round. On Saturday it ranked first.
"I feel like I just left myself in better spots on the greens," McIlroy said. "I gave myself easier putts, putts that didn't break two ways, and I didn't have a ton — I felt like, when I got it rolling there on the back nine, every putt was like a cup right or a cup left."
The numbers backed up that feeling. His first six birdies all came from one-putts from less than nine feet. He rattled off five birdies on the inward nine alone. It was his best round of the tournament by a wide margin and has given him a path into contention, though five strokes is a significant gap to close in one round.
McIlroy has won the Tour Championship three times previously. A fourth title would require a final round for the ages.
Hovland, meanwhile, enters Sunday having played some of the most consistent golf of the week. He holds the outright lead and has the structure of the tournament in his favor heading into the final 18 holes. Gerard, who sits one back, will join him in the final group.
