HBO has unveiled redesigned crests for the four Hogwarts houses as part of its upcoming Harry Potter series, and the reception from fans has been largely negative.

The new designs were revealed during a worldwide Back to Hogwarts event, according to Screen Rant. Fans immediately compared the new emblems to those used in the Warner Bros. film franchise, and the reaction was swift. Critics called the designs "cheap" and said they looked "sloppy," with one complaint reading: "It's like they don't put enough effort; it's not an improvement, looks sloppy."

The central complaint focused on how minimal the new crests appear. The Warner Bros. versions featured intricate, medieval-style designs. HBO's versions use a simpler emblem format, each featuring the house's animal mascot surrounded by a floral embellishment. One fan described Ravenclaw's updated crest as looking like a "fire breathing chicken."

The four Hogwarts houses are Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff, and Ravenclaw. Each house is associated with distinct personality traits. Gryffindor, home to Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley, is associated with bravery, nerve, chivalry, and courage, and uses a lion as its symbol. Slytherin, whose members include Draco Malfoy and Severus Snape, values ambition, cunning, leadership, and resourcefulness, with a serpent as its mascot.

Hufflepuff, associated with patience, justice, and loyalty, counts Cedric Diggory and Newt Scamander among its notable members. Ravenclaw, the house of Luna Lovegood and Cho Chang, prizes intelligence, learning, wisdom, and wit, and uses an eagle as its emblem.

The HBO series represents one of the most high-profile fantasy adaptations the network has taken on since Game of Thrones. Season one has not yet been given a release date, but anticipation around it has been building as fans look for details about how the new production will handle familiar material from J.K. Rowling's novels.

The redesigned crests are among the first concrete visual elements from the new series to be made public, and the response suggests that fan expectations for fidelity to the established look of the Wizarding World remain high.
