A mobile mammography unit operated by Mercy Health will travel throughout the Valley during September, bringing breast cancer screenings closer to patients who might not otherwise access them easily, according to a report from WFMJ.

The Mercy Health Mammography Van is scheduled to visit multiple locations across the region throughout the month. Mobile mammography programs are designed to reduce barriers to screening, including transportation difficulties, distance from medical facilities, and scheduling challenges that prevent some patients from visiting a fixed clinic location.

Breast cancer screening through mammography is a standard tool for early detection. Medical guidelines generally recommend regular mammograms for women above a certain age, though specific recommendations vary depending on the advising organization and a patient's individual risk factors. Early detection through screening has been associated with better treatment outcomes.

Mobile health units have become an increasingly common approach for health systems trying to reach patients in areas with fewer medical resources or in communities where in-clinic attendance rates are lower. A van-based program allows a health system to bring imaging technology directly to workplaces, community centers, or other accessible locations.

Patients interested in scheduling a screening through the Mercy Health Mammography Van were encouraged to contact Mercy Health directly for specific stop dates, locations, and appointment availability throughout September.
