Sean Ono Lennon and longtime partner Charlotte Kemp Muhl announced the birth of their son on Tuesday night, September 1, in an Instagram post that showed the couple cradling their newborn between them. They named the boy Aurelius.
"@charlottekempmuhl and I have created a Human Bean! His name is Aurelius. Thank You!" Ono Lennon wrote in the caption. In the photo, he wore a black shirt, black sailor's cap, and black eyeglasses, while Muhl stood beside him in a flowing white top. Aurelius slept in Ono Lennon's arms in a black and white striped onesie.
Aurelius is the first grandchild of Yoko Ono and the late John Lennon. The former Beatle was shot and killed by Mark David Chapman outside The Dakota apartment building in New York on December 8, 1980. Sean Ono Lennon was five years old at the time. He is now 50. Muhl is 39.
Muhl also posted a series of photographs marking the occasion, including one of her staring up at a camera while holding a small crab in one hand, with Aurelius lying on her chest in a Baby Bjorn. Another showed her standing in a lake in a billowing white dress with the baby strapped to her chest. The series ended with a close-up of Aurelius sleeping peacefully on a blanket.
"We made a human! Am convinced DNA is agentic alien quaternary code," Muhl wrote in her caption. "The sleep deprivation only adds to the surrealism…Burping technique tips welcome. Been playing him Aphex Twin and Stravinsky. Meconium is crazy."
The post drew congratulations from a wide range of musicians and public figures, according to Billboard. Zak Starkey, son of Ringo Starr, wrote "Amazing." Actresses Liv Tyler and Ione Skye and Bijou Phillips also commented. Patti Smith wrote, "Oh Sean I'm so happy for you both." Elliot Mintz, the former publicist for John Lennon and Yoko Ono, wrote, "there are some moments in life that are perfect. this is one of them." Dominic Fike posted a series of heart emoji.
Ono Lennon and Muhl have been partners for nearly 20 years and are bandmates in The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger. Earlier this year, Ono Lennon also released a third studio album with Primus bassist Les Claypool under their collaboration name the Claypool Lennon Delirium.
